What does every human have in common?

What People Think is Universal is Often Not

The people you might see most often in a Walmart tend to have a clear idea of what is and isn’t a human universal.

Yet…nuclear families aren't universal - extended families and multi-generational compounds were historically normal. Private property wasn't universal - many societies had communal land and overlapping use rights. Meals weren't always three times daily, and constant busyness wasn't universally valued.

Some of these, like the meals, you can even trace back to a public relations campaign.

Donald Brown made a list of universals. I can tell you that ‘childhood fear of strangers’ and ‘fear of snakes’ are not universal.
