In 324 BCE, Alexander conquered the Achaemenid Empire.

However, as Genghis Khan would note centuries later, it is always harder to rule than it is to conquer.

So Alexander enacted a plan to join Macedonians and Persians.

He married a Persian, and ensured many of his officers did the same thing- that their offspring would represent the melding of their civilizations.

Alexander had many talents, but one of them was certainly a touch for unification.
