Tamil dress code: One part Quran, one part Bible, zero Gita

On the Stickiness of Norms

Tamil Nadu, India, is home to many temples that boast dress codes which often involve slacks or shirts.

Almost none of the gods, goddesses, kings, queens, princes, or princesses on temple walls would pass this dress code.

A quick look at the archaeological record confirms that these dress codes were passed to South Indians by Muslim and Christian conquests.

It’s very difficult to change the norms of a local populace.

But when you do, they will stick.

You only need to get it in there once- at the right place and time.
