Who Wins When Succession Breaks

The Roman Far East has broken away into the Palmyrene Empire, led by Zenobia

In the West, Gaul broke away into the Gallic Empire, taking Britannia and Germania with it.

This should have been the end of Rome.

But for Aurelian.

Aurelian was a cavalry officer, one of the many Barracks Emperors of the Crisis of the Third Century.

Of modest background, he nonetheless put down both the Gallic and Palmyrene Empires, making the Roman Empire whole again.

Between Aurelian and Henry VII, we can say that at least two succession breakdowns resulted in better leaders than anything official succession could have provided.
