Loose Tolerances

What Rifle Tolerances Teach Us About Selecting for Interstellar Missions

Who do you want on a colony ship that won't reach its destination for six generations?

The JP Enterprises SCR-11 is a .223 Wylde rifle with an 18" 1:8 twist barrel. It has a proprietary buffer spring system, and a click-adjustable detent system for repeatable setup and secure retention of gas setting.

And those tolerances?

Oooh baby are those TIGHT!

Manufactured to our exacting specifications and used in all of our rifles, JP Supermatch™ barrels are turned from 416R stainless steel, lead lapped, air-gauged and cryogenically treated for cold bore shot predictability, minimum thermal drift, outstanding accuracy and extended barrel life.

Now I ask: would you want the SCR-11 in a combat zone?

It's better than not having a rifle.

However, that's not what it's designed for. The 'SCR' stands for Sports Competition Rifle.

All those tiny tolerances mean the slightest misalignment and it's not going to fire right. Take it through the mud or snow and it's done.

What you'd want is something with looser tolerances, like a BCM, Colt LE6920, or FN M4.

These have a whole lot of parts compatibility, and an ability to take the elements. Something you've already put rounds through in all sorts of environments.

A rifle you know.

Most people have narrow preferences, and correctly shy away from change.

But you and I, we're in a fight to spread life.

We need people who've been dragged through the dirt, who know what they move like on their worst day, who've been out of the frying pan and into the deep freeze.

People who are more open.

So the more states someone has been through, the easier they will be to predict from current behavior. What they are has been tested more.

If they've engaged in the kind of physical activity that has brought them to medical exhaustion, if they've been around people of many cultures, if they've been both poor and rich, if they eat anything you put on their plate, and if they've explored every common altered state?

You have a better idea of what they'll be like in the mud.

There is a place for the competition rifle- in a narrow, highly defined, and highly controlled environment.

For now, such an environment is the default.

A generation ship is a 200-year combat zone.

We want people who’ve already misfired and kept shooting
